Tools:

  • Clear glass or plastic bottle
  • Water
  • Food coloring
  • Vitamic C tablet
  • Vegetable oil
  • Flashlight

Steps:

  1. Pour water into the bottle until it fills quarter part of the bottle
  2. Pour vegetable oil into the bottle until full
  3. Put five drops of food coloring into the bottle
  4. Put vitamic C tablet into the bottle
  5. Turn the flashlight on, and light the bottle
  6. See the effect! Amazing, isn’t it?

How can it happen?
When we pour vegetable oil into the bottle that has been filled with water before, we can already see the separation between oil and water. This happens because of the density difference between water and oil, causing them can’t mix into one.

Then, when the vitamin C tablet is put into the bottle, it will react as it meets water, oil, and food coloring, resulting in it producing carbon dioxide bubbles that make the water below will come up, and when it reaches the top of the bottle, the carbon dioxide will be released into the air, making the water fall down to the bottom. This is the example of acid-alkali reaction.
